True Grit: Country Singers With Sandpaper Pipes Redefine the Genre’s Sound and Balance

"We've kind of come out of the quote-unquote 'boyfriend country' phase."

Billboard
Tom Roland

May 13, 2022

The modern country male voice is made from scratch. The grainy sound of Luke Combs, the wild rasp of Chris Stapleton, the sandpaper tone of Thomas Rhett or the gravelly delivery of Dierks Bentley — they’re not sideline features of just a handful of country guys. Added to the voices of Brantley Gilbert, Morgan Wallen,… Read More about True Grit: Country Singers With Sandpaper Pipes Redefine the Genre’s Sound and Balance

Capitol Hill Soundtrack April 2022

April 29, 2022

In this edition...

Iconic rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers launches exclusive SiriusXM channel; Pandora adds new Country Grit to its country music station lineup; learn more about the diverse voices brought to you by SiriusXM’s Qualified Entity program; SiriusXM joins forces with Brandon Marshall’s I Am Athlete; and we announce the premiere of two new original scripted podcasts with Audio Up.

Red Hot Chili Peppers launched their own exclusive SiriusXM music channel, Whole Lotta Red Hot, coinciding with their new album Unlimited Love released April 1. The new channel features exclusive track-by-track commentary from the band and showcases music from the band’s lengthy career, including their vast catalog of energetic live performances, genre-blending studio tracks, and a vast selection of music personally curated by the band. In celebration of the channel and the band’s new album, the Red Hot Chili Peppers will perform at the world-famous Apollo Theater in New York later this year as part of SiriusXM’s Small Stage Series. More info here.

Pandora launched Country Grit, a new station born from the undeniable popularity of rock-infused, edgy country music that pushes both sonic and lyrical boundaries. “I’m a fire-tongued dеvil with a belly full of gasoline,” sings Cody Jinks on “All It Cost Me Was Everything,” which plays out like a lyrical confession. It’s this kind of heart-on-sleeve, uncensored songwriting coupled with dueling electric and steel guitars that defines Country Grit. Jinks joins other indie trailblazers on the station, along with icons and red-hot newcomers, linked by their affinity for loud guitars and the cold-hard truth. Country Grit joins a robust lineup of country stations, one of Pandora’s most-listened genres.

No matter what you’re looking to listen to, SiriusXM has it. It’s not only what fans want, but we believe providing a diverse range of viewpoints and content is important for our promoting a broader understanding of the world around us. Learn more about our Qualified Entity program, which offers a national platform to original programming from diverse viewpoints or targets historically underserved audiences. We’re excited to announce the launch of Holy Culture Radio, SiriusXM’s latest qualified entity channel and the home for everything Christian Hip-Hop and Rhythm & Praise. Read more in this month’s policy blog.

SiriusXM and I Am Athlete have joined forces in a new expansive content deal that includes a live nightly radio show and other game-changing projects. The new agreement will expand the already popular I Am Athlete platform, the athlete-led media network founded by former NFL All-Pro receiver Brandon Marshall, by delivering new innovative programming to more fans who want an authentic “locker room” perspective on sports and pop culture directly from those who played the game.  I Am Athlete Tonight airs live every weekday from 7-9 pm ET/4-6 pm PT on SiriusXM’s Mad Dog Sports Radio beginning this week. Learn more here.

SiriusXM and innovative podcast content studio Audio Up announced the launch of two new original scripted musical podcasts, the first co-branded productions under the creative and strategic agreement between the two companies. The two podcasts – season two of critically-acclaimed country-themed musical Make It Up As We Go and highly-anticipated new sci-fi/comedy musical series Sonic Leap – will premiere on May 3 across the SXM App, Pandora, and Stitcher, as well as major podcast platforms in the U.S. All advertising and sponsorships for programming co-produced by Audio Up and SiriusXM are sold exclusively through SiriusXM’s SXM Media combined sales organization.

In this edition...

“She’s Got the Mic” in special Women’s History Month programming across SiriusXM, Pandora and Stitcher; SiriusXM Cares joins forces with the Smithsonian’s National Museum of African American History and Culture; Urban View host Joe Madison helps champion the Emmett Till Antilynching Act; our latest policy blog looks to the future of privacy-centric audio advertising; and congratulations to SiriusXM CEO Jennifer Witz on being named to Billboard’s 2022 Women in Music Top Executives list!

“She’s Got the Mic” in special Women’s History Month programming across SiriusXM, Pandora, and Stitcher. SiriusXM raised the voices of prolific and up-and-coming female artists with four limited-engagement music channels, spanning genres and artists from across the decades. Pandora launched The Top Thumb Hundred: HerStory station, plus female-driven Modes across music stations. And Stitcher featured multiple playlists highlighting several of our women-centric and women-hosted podcasts covering everything from pop culture and comedy, to news and history. Help us celebrate these awe-inspiring women who’ve made lasting contributions!

SiriusXM is proud to support NMAAHC’s mission of documenting African American life, history, and culture, specifically how African American music plays a central role in the history of American music. SiriusXM Cares, the company’s charitable arm, recently announced a $2 million gift to help the museum continue its critical work. In recognition of this gift, NMAAHC will designate its Neighborhood Record Store, an interactive destination housed within the permanent “Musical Crossroads” exhibition, as the SiriusXM Neighborhood Record Store. Learn more about the Neighborhood Record Store and NMAAHC.

Activist, acclaimed political commentator and SiriusXM Urban View host Joe Madison has been a prominent voice in the fight to pass the Emmett Till Antilynching Act, legislation to explicitly criminalize lynching and make it a hate crime at the federal level. Despite decades of failed attempts in Congress and hundreds of bills introduced to address this important issue, Madison remained an advocate for these efforts for years, using his platform and voice to push legislators forward. Learn more about his work to help pass this historic legislation.

The digital media revolution has illuminated an important tension: the desire across a broad range of stakeholders – listeners, publishers, advertisers – for ever-more personalization in content, balanced with appropriate concerns about online privacy. While traditional identifiers, such as cookies, are being phased out, audio content and listener demand only continue to grow, making good, responsible ad delivery that much more difficult. So it’s an important time to talk about what the future of audio advertising looks like. Read more about our approach in the latest Policy Blog.

We’re very excited to share that our CEO, Jennifer Witz, was recognized by Billboard on their 2022 Women in Music Top Executives list! Each year, their Women in Music event honors women in the music industry who made significant contributions to the business and who, through their work and continued success, inspire generations of women to take on increasing responsibilities within the field.
